The Secret to Love Starts Here
On the day my younger sister Becky texted me a picture of her brand-new engagement ring, I got stood up on a date.
Well, not exactly stood up. I had arrived at the restaurant at the appointed time, only to get a text from the guy saying he was just finishing up his baseball game, and could I meet him in a town about an hour away?
After texting back a polite “no,” I drove home. As I fired up my Netflix, mixed emotions washed over me like waves: joy for my beloved sister, and an intense sadness for myself.
I was 36 years old, and I yearned for love with all my heart. I didn’t understand why men treated me as “second-best,” while the other women around me were falling in love and getting engaged.
In actuality, I had been treating myself like second-best. By accepting undesirable behavior from men who didn’t value me, I wasn’t proclaiming to the Universe what I was actually worth.
That night was a turning point for me. When the guy tried to reschedule with me, I held a boundary. “The man I’m looking for will value me (and my time) from the start,” I told him.
Thus began my journey to a deep, abiding self-love. I learned how to own my worthiness and settle for nothing less than mutual respect and passion with a man who recognized my value.
Everything in my dating life changed. From then on, I only met men who treated me like a queen and wanted the same things I did (the other guys completely fell off my radar. I never came across them anymore).
The happy culmination of this journey was the destined meeting with my beloved Darrin. But that’s a story for another blog post.
The content of my blog is shifting. I’ve been so inspired by the women in my “Opening to Sacred Love” healing program that I’m now going to be writing about love in all its forms: romantic, platonic, familial, and the crowning jewel of all, lovingkindness towards oneself.
If you are a long-time follower, I hope you will stay on board for this writerly celebration of love. My husband, Darrin Kagele, will join me as a co-author from time to time.
