Be the butterfly

Butterflies truly are nature’s most perfect metaphor for change.

Before the caterpillar even enters the chrysalis, it grows nice and fat. By its innate wisdom, the caterpillar knows that eating will provide the energy required for massive transformation.

Once inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar literally has a meltdown. It becomes complete goo. But it’s okay – the chrysalis is a safe space, and it can contain it all.

Then magic happens. Somehow, the goo becomes a butterfly with majestic, trembling wings.

At that point, the chrysalis – once safe and warm – becomes an obstacle. The butterfly must fight with all its might to break free of it.

Here’s the kicker: it’s the butterfly’s very struggle to escape the chrysalis that strengthens its wings, and that’s what allows it to fly.

If you’re seeking growth and transformation in your life, here are five things to ask yourself:

1.       Am I building up my resources of energy in preparation for change?

2.       Am I willing to become “goo” for awhile in the service of getting to my next step?

3.       Can I trust that I am safe and supported, even as I have this meltdown?

4.       Will I fight my way out of my comfort zone when it is time to break free?

5.       How high am I ready to soar?

The last question is the most important, and it’s all up to you.

But if you ask the butterfly, it knows no limits.

Did your last meltdown ultimately lead to new growth and discoveries? I’d love to hear about it in a comment!
